Abstract
Background: Social media has become an important part of daily life among school students. However, excessive use of social media can lead to addiction and may affect students’ physical, psychological, and academic wellbeing. Aim: To assess the effectiveness of an awareness program on knowledge regarding the hazards of social media addiction among school students. Methods: A quantitative pre-test and post-test research design was adopted for the study. The study was conducted among 30 school students aged 11–14 years at Sir Isaac Newton School, Pappakovil, Nagapattinam. Participants were selected using the lot method. Data were collected using a structured self-administered questionnaire. Results: The mean pre-test knowledge score was 14.14, which increased to 18.40 in the post-test. The calculated t value was −19.95 with a p value of 0.000, indicating a highly significant improvement in knowledge after the awareness program. Conclusion: The study concluded that the awareness program was effective in improving the knowledge of school students regarding the hazards of social media addiction. Educational interventions can help promote responsible use of social media and reduce the risks associated with social media addiction.
